Starting Autotransformers

Function
Autotransformer starters are primarily used in high-power drive systems where traditional inrush current reduction methods, such as star–delta switching, are insufficient or technically difficult to implement. The use of an autotransformer enables precise reduction of the motor supply voltage during startup so that the current drawn from the network does not exceed permissible values.
If required, a multi-tap version can be provided, allowing selection of the optimal voltage level. By reducing the motor voltage, the autotransformer starter limits peak current values, decreases mechanical stress and protects power sources, including generators, thereby extending the service life of the entire system.
