Transformers with Vv - connection
Function
Transformers in the “V” configuration are used wherever it is necessary to supply a high-power single-phase load from a three-phase network without causing excessive load imbalance.
In a typical situation, connecting such a load directly between two phases results in significant loading of only two conductors and serious disturbance of the three-phase system balance.
The “V” configuration (sometimes referred to as “open-delta”) uses two transformers instead of three, connected at an appropriate angle to distribute the load more evenly across the supply network. Although the system still operates on two phases, its design reduces asymmetry and improves overall system stability.
- Ability to supply high-power single-phase loads from a three-phase network
- Significant reduction of phase load imbalance
- Improved network stability through more even current distribution
- Higher energy efficiency compared to direct phase-to-phase supply
- Space and cost savings — the configuration requires two transformers instead of three
- Simple and reliable design, particularly valued in continuous operation or high-load environments
- Marine industry
- Heavy industry
- High-power equipment requiring single-phase supply
- Installations highly sensitive to load imbalance
